How to manage stress according to buddhism - Veneux - 2014

OVERVIEW

From a Buddhist point of view, since stress is the result of causes and conditions, the only way to remedy it is to go back to the root causes and apply the right methods. The Buddha said that he could not take away the suffering of other beings with his own hands, but he dedicated his life to offering the infallible means to free oneself from it. Rinpoche introduces here the bases of this personal work, by showing us that of all the causes of stress, those internal to our mind prevail. Starting from the observation that we lack resistance, while we squander our strength in the pursuit of fanciful desires that are never satisfied, by training ourselves little by little to improve our abilities and take control of our mind, we will then be able to escape all pressure and live happier.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THESE TEACHINGS?

With simple words imbued with profound wisdom, Rinpoche invites us to carry out these reflections step by step :

  1. Better identifying the situations creative of stress.
  2. Developping one's resistance capacities even if they seem very weak at first, taking into account the very nature of stress which consists in not being able to bear the said situations.
  3. Regaining one's strength by leaving aside all physical, oral or mental activities that are useless and drain one's energy
  4. Seeking to take control of one's mind, studying its components to discern aggravating factors such as attachment, distraction, from positive factors such as patience, concentration and wisdom, and acting accordingly.
Since mental qualities, unlike physical abilities, can be developed infinitely, there is no doubt that if you think about it and put the means to it, everything becomes possible.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Study and reflection are our first tools to avoid being trapped in stress. There is nevertheless an exception in the case of a traumatic shock where the total rest of the mind is necessary to regain one's strength before pursuing a restorative work.
It is not necessary to be a Buddhist or to become one to apply the methods taught by the Buddha. Through the study of the components of our mind, by knowing how to recognize which ones are useful or not, we will be able to take control of our mind and respond freely, without further stress, to any situation in life.
