Refuge in the three jewels - Bali - 2005

OVERVIEW

This commentary by Venerable Dagpo Rinpoché reminds us that “refuge in the Three Jewels” is a state of mind and an effect arising from specific causes. We are challenged to look inside ourselves to examine whether we have actually brought together the causes needed for this state of mind to arise in us.

Do we have heartfelt alarm at our vulnerability to suffering and conviction that the Three Jewels can provide effective protection, based on a clear understanding of what the Three Jewels actually are? For Mahayana refuge, do we possess intense compassion that incites us to develop ourselves all the way to buddhahood for the sake of every sentient being? If we lack these states of mind but aspire to them, how do we cultivate their inner causes?

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THESE TEACHINGS?

With admirable clarity, the fundamental notions of Buddhist refuge practice are laid out: the general and specific characteristics of the objects of refuge, why they are sources of ultimate happiness and freedom from suffering, the various ways of taking refuge, and so on. A wealth of practical information and advice is provided, taking into account individual differences in what inspires us, so that we can build up a personal relationship with each object of refuge.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

We are advised that each of use needs to personally develop our own clarity about all the factors involved, and that our refuge will be effective once we actually live in accord with all we have understood. This fundamental teaching of the Buddha, as explained here by Rinpoché, helps us to do just that.
