The four noble truths - Avignon - 2013

OVERVIEW

Rinpoche offers us here a detailed explanation of the four noble truths - the first teaching given by the Buddha after his Enlightenment, through their sixteen characteristics. He thus describes with exceptional clarity the way in which we are bound to suffering and the way to free ourselves from it.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THESE TEACHINGS?

This teaching is an invaluable description of the mechanisms of suffering, as well as a guide to putting an end to it. Rinpoche addresses successively:

  1. Knowledge of the four noble truths: by giving an initial description of the truths of suffering, origin, cessation and the path, as well as the way they relate to each other.

  2. The sixteen characteristics of the four noble truths: showing how each of the four truths includes four aspects.

  3. The relation between these sixteen characteristics and sixteen erroneous perceptions: by highlighting how the understanding of each of these sixteen characteristics dispels sixteen erroneous apprehensions of reality.

  4. How meditation on these sixteen characteristics enables you to progress along the path and reach liberation: describing how to meditate and practice this teaching from moment to moment.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

You will gain a deeper understanding of the process that binds you to the cycle of existences and the way that will allow you to escape from it. Such an understanding may prove decisive in arousing in you a genuine renunciation, a deep aspiration for liberation, a universal compassion and extraordinary bodhicitta.
